Burnout syndrome, also known as professional exhaustion syndrome, is an emotional disorder tied to work stress and lifestyle.
Burnout shows up through symptoms such as physical and mental exhaustion, nervousness, frustration, difficulty concentrating and insomnia, among other conditions. In most cases it can lead to depression and anxiety.
That is why it is important to look for tools and ways to fight it. Having to work under pressure for a long period is not advisable. Here are three strategies to prevent and cope with these episodes:
- Be aware: assess the workload you are carrying and determine whether it is reasonable. Set realistic, achievable goals.
- Ask for help: having the support of your leader or coworkers can be an option and will help you get through the situation. You can seek help through the Employee Assistance Program your company offers, or from a mental health professional.
- Mindfulness: mindfulness is the act of focusing on the flow of your breath and being intensely aware of what you are perceiving and feeling in each moment, without interpretation or judgment. It helps you clear your mind and stay in the here and now. This technique helps reduce anxiety and stress.
If you have been experiencing these symptoms for a long time, it is time to seek help. Burnout caused by work stress requires much deeper treatment than a few days of vacation.
Start making small adjustments in your life and take control of the situation before it is too late.
Remember, you can always walk away from the things that take away your peace.
